Effect of Intravenous Glucose on Concentration of Insulin in Maternal and Umbilical-cord Plasma.

چکیده
It has been suggested that the foetus of a diabetic mother is subjected to intermittent hyperglycaemia and that this is followed by pancreatic islet hyperplasia, increased insulin secretion, and greater deposition of fat (Osler, 1960). Measurements of plasma-insulin-like activity in the newborn in response to a glucose load have shown that the baby of a diabetic mother has a greater rise of insulin-like activity in the plasma than the baby of a normal mother (Baird and Farquhar, 1962). Similar investigations have not been made on the foetus. In order to investigate what effects varying the concentration of glucose in the maternal blood might have upon the bloodsugar and plasma-insulin concentration of the foetus, intravenous glucose was administered to mothers in labour. This paper reports maternal and umbilical-cord blood-sugar and plasma-insulin concentrations (a) in normal mothers and (b) in mothers who received glucose infusions or intravenous glucose injections during labour.

Effect of maternal variable stress on oxidative status and glucose metabolism in pubertal male rats
Introduction: Metabolic disorders are affected by negative stress experiences in the early stages of life. Accordingly, in this study, the effects of stress during pregnancy on oxidative status and glucose homeostasis in pubertal male Wistar rats were investigated. Materials and Methods: After pregnancy, female rats (200±30 g) were divided into 2 groups (6 rats per group) of stress and non-stre...
متن کاملThe effect of maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy on carbohydrate metabolism in adulthood in rats
Introduction: Many of the diseases of adulthood are originated from the intrauterine conditions during fetal life. Because of the importance of thyroid hormones in growth and development of the fetus, the effects of maternal hypothyroidism on carbohydrate metabolism in adulthood was investigated. Methods: Pregnant rats were divided into the fetal hypothyroidism (FH) and the control (C) group...
متن کاملThe Effect of Maternal Anemia and Umbilical Cord Cortisol Level on Birth Weight and Length
Background & Aims: Maternal anemia in pregnancy is a considerable risk factor for both mother and fetus. Growth retardation, intra uterine fetal death, maternal cardiovascular symptoms and reduction in blood supply are among outcomes of maternal anemia. Since there are different reports about the relationship between low maternal hemoglobin level and low birght weight, the precent study was des...
متن کاملبررسی رابطه پره اکلامپسی با لیپیدهای سرم مادر و بند ناف نوزاد
Background and purpose: Preeclampsia is a medical condition in pregnancy that is determined by hypertension and proteinuria. Among many predisposing factors in pathophysiology of preeclampsia, the role of lipid peroxides is recently emphasized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of preeclampsia with maternal plasma and umbilical cord lipid concentration. Materials and method...
متن کاملThe Effect of Maternal High-Fat Feeding on Energy Homeostasis in Stressed Adult Male Rat Offspring
Introduction: In the present study the effect of chronic maternal high-fat diet consumption on energy homeostasis and glucose metabolism in response to chronic stress was investigated in adult male rats. Materials and Methods: Female rats were divided into two groups of normal and high fat diets. Each group received their diet from 3 weeks before pregnancy until the end of lactation. At 8 weeks...
